The world halted yesterday, August 25, 2026, as news broke of the death of East Tennessee\u2019s beloved Dolly Parton. At 80 years old, Parton made waves with everything she did; between being a musician, entertainer, philanthropist, and cultural icon, it is safe to say that she lived a busy 9-to-5. However, many East Tennessee fans know her for more than just what she accomplished but also for the impact her personality and kind contributions had on East Tennessee culture. Her warmth, ambition, and connection to her Appalachian roots gave each and every one of us pride in our Blue Ridge, back-country culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean was born January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Sevier County, Tennessee. She was the fourth out of 12 siblings raised in a large, low-income family in the Smoky Mountains. Parton’s early interest in music, sparked in large part by her uncle Bill Owens, grew into a lifelong career, but her upbringing and Appalachian heritage shaped her music and worldview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her rise to stardom began with a move to Nashville to establish herself as a songwriter and performer. Her distinctive songwriting voice helped her emerge as a solo artist, proving early success in country music as she worked with Porter Wagoner. Some of her most well-known, signature songs include \u201cJolene,\u201d \u201c9 to 5,\u201d \u201cCoat of Many Colors,\u201d and \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d; however, she found musical success not just in country music but in pop, bluegrass, gospel, and other genres. In 1999, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Shortly after that, in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame proudly followed suit. Then, in 2020, she was named Tennessean of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame before being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, celebrating her influence on generations of musicians as well as Tennesseans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music wasn\u2019t the only thing Parton succeeded in. She starred in many classic movies such as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas<\/em>, Steel Magnolias<\/em>, 9 to 5<\/em>, Rhinestone Cowboy<\/em>, and Straight Talk<\/em>. She had a persona that combined humor, glamour, humility, and business savvy in every film, although it is common belief that she was just being herself. Speaking of business savvy, along with her creative outlets, she furthered her entertainment legacy by founding Rebel Railroad in 1961 as a small attraction; just over 25 years later, it officially reopened as Dollywood on May 3, 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parton\u2019s Dollywood opened the door for more opportunities for her to share her love for humankind. In 1995, through the Dollywood Foundation, Dolly Parton started The Imagination Library in an effort to provide free books to children. Imagination Library now provides free books for children in not just the United States but in parts of Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland.  Imagination Library is just a small part of her charitable work and commitment to education and her home region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she got older, fans could hardly tell, as she continued songwriting, recording, business ventures, and public appearances, remaining relevant across generations and musical genres, all while keeping her devotion to family, faith, and Appalachian heritage. Dolly Parton\u2019s reputation for kindness and generosity has spread across the world like a wildfire and will continue to do so as she leaves behind a legacy of music, film, and charitable work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
