Harrison, Editor-in-Chief

I was 18 when I first heard “Is It True” by Tame Impala. I remember sitting outside in the sun on a warm spring afternoon listening to a shared playlist I have with one of my best friends. After the first few chords, I was hooked. The catchy tune combined with powerful, moving lyrics got me addicted to the effect Kevin Parker’s creative expression has on one’s soul. Two years and one concert later, Tame Impala isn’t just music I listen to; it’s music that has become part of how I understand myself, my memories, and the world around me.

Tame Impala really is just one guy, Kevin Parker. In an interview with The Project in 2022, Parker admitted there was no rhyme or reason to the “band’s” name, but he did address the confusion about Tame Impala being a full band or just one man, saying that he was afraid record labels wouldn’t want to sign a one-man show. Even though Tame Impala is technically a solo recording project led by Parker, live performances feature a full band, providing listeners with two experiences between the recorded music and the live shows.

Kevin Parker of Tame Impala while perfoming on stage | Emma Harrison

Parker is a mastermind, with expertise in solo producing and recording. Each of his recorded songs is produced at home or in a private studio. He lays each track down before layering in lyrics. When it comes to Parker’s musical expertise, he creates songs that foster moods and emotions that can be difficult to put into words. And with his distinctive blend of psychedelic rock, electronic production, dreamy melodies, and immersive sound, his music can feel both intimate and enormous at the same time, both in recorded and live performances.

Tame Impala is just beginning to wrap up the end of his 2026 Summer Deadbeat tour, which took place all over North America, from Miami, Florida, to Seattle, Washington, spanning the months of July through August. Parker hasn’t stopped there; with the Australian leg starting this October, he plans to continue the Deadbeat tour for the rest of this month before starting the 2027 tour in Manchester, England, next May.

Tame Impala while performing on stage | Emma Harrison

The Deadbeat tour is unlike anything else, with a phenomenal atmosphere brought to the audience by unreal production, visuals, lighting, and sound, giving familiar Tame Impala songs listeners know and love a whole new vision when experienced live. The setlist mixes newer material from Deadbeat with older fan favorites, including “Let It Happen,” “Elephant,” and “The Less I Know the Better.” The North American leg also featured a 360-degree stage design that not only looked impressive but that also provided a deeper connection between the performers and the audience, as everyone in the audience had a moment with Parker and his band facing them, really giving concertgoers the opportunity to experience the meaning behind each song, fully feeling and reflecting on Parker’s emotional lyricism.

As I said before, I’ve been listening to Tame Impala for the past two years, and it is safe to say Parker’s music has made a huge impact on my life. He tackles hard subjects such as anxiety and change, both parts of my life that I have had many struggles with. My excitement when I finally got tickets to see him in person performing all of my favorite songs in Nashville, Tennessee, was off the charts.

The show didn’t disappoint; it was the most unreal concert experience I have ever had, and I am not the only one who shares a similar feeling. Imaginary Gardens alumni editor-in-chief, Draven Copeland, attended the concert with me.

“I’ve been to many concerts in my life, but none of them topped the production of Tame Impala’s show,” he said. “The light show managed to be unique — even though pretty much any show you go to will have lights flashing along with the performance, these were on a completely new level that topped anything I’d ever seen. The multiple sets on different stages and bathroom break intermission were fun additions to keep things interesting, and the music was obviously top-notch. Even though I went into the show only knowing a few songs, I felt involved in the show the entire time, and the vibes were strong for the full two-hour show. It was a nice reassurance that modern shows from popular artists can actually be worth the money — even though I was in the upper levels of the stadium, it didn’t feel at all like I was missing out on anything. Overall, a fantastic show, even for someone who wasn’t already a fan of the artist.”

Tame Impala performing on stage | Emma Harrison

Music can be deeply personal, but, just as Copeland pointed out, a concert makes that personal connection collective whether the audience knows the lyrics or not. Sometimes music makes people feel less alone, even when they don’t know the person standing beside them. And if there is one thing a Tame Impala concert is good at, it is giving concertgoers the comfort of realizing that music they associate with private moments matters to other people, too. Seeing Tame Impala live changed how I understand my connection to his music.

So instead of ending with a rating of Tame Impala’s 2026 Deadbeat tour (which is a 10 out of 10 for sure), I leave you with a reflection on what music means to us, as it has the uncanny ability to bring you right back to an image, feeling, or memory. Tame Impala is the perfect representation of this, and as the lights came back on and the speakers went silent, the meaning behind Kevin Parker’s music stayed with me and still does over two months later. But that is exactly what makes certain music so important; it becomes attached to the people we were, the people we’re becoming, and the moments we never want to forget.

The Chief’s Top Seven Songs:

“Yes I’m Changing”

“Piece Of Heaven”

“The Less I Know The Better”

“Reality In Motion”

“Solitude Is Bliss”

“Is It True”

“End Of Summer”

By Emma G.
