PSCC’s Athletic Advancements: Success and School Spirit

PSCC’s Athletic Advancements: Success and School Spirit
By Caleb Stinnett, with additional reporting by Alex Gillenwalters

Pellissippi State Community College has recently made significant steps in their athletics programs. Pellissippi State has established basketball teams and soccer teams in both men’s and women’s leagues, and they have all accomplished a lot, emphasizing the college’s commitment to improving student life through sports.

In March 2024, Pellissippi State hired Darrian Jones as the head coach for its first men’s basketball team. Coach Jones brought with him a wealth of experience, stating that he had “coached 16 years before this” and had previously developed numerous all-conference athletes at other coaching jobs. Under Jones, the school’s current men’s basketball team was assembled and began their first season in November 2024 and, in just their first few weeks, his Panthers held a 5-4 record.

In addition to making changes to the men’s basketball team, Pellissippi State hired JaQuandrea Dudley as the head coach for the women’s basketball team. Dudley, coming from Columbia State as assistant coach for their men’s and women’s basketball programs, brought plenty of experience and knowledge of the game. At Columbia State he helped develop multiple all-conference players in both men’s and women’s basketball. With Dudley’s help, the women’s basketball team was created, beginning their first season in November 2024. Within a month, they held a 6-4 record, starting both of Pellissippi State’s basketball teams off strong.

The men’s soccer team at Pellissippi State has also experienced a historic season. After securing their first NJCAA Division II Atlantic District Championship by defeating Cape Fear Community College, 3-1, the Panthers earned a spot in the national tournament, a victory that marks a significant milestone as the team’s first ever opportunity for postseason play. This national championship tournament is scheduled to take place from November 17 to 23 in Huntsville, Alabama.

The women’s soccer team at Pellissippi State has had similar results to previous years, holding a record of 7-4-3 as of October, compared to their previous season record of 8-8. Disappointingly, the women’s soccer team lost out on their opportunity to compete in this year’s postseason tournaments, but their consistency in their sport gives them only one path in the future, a way up to the championship.

Not only has the formation of the basketball teams provided students with new opportunities to engage in sports and contribute their voice to the school spirit, both soccer teams’ success has brought pride to the institution, inspiring both current students and alumni.

Pellissippi State’s recent initiatives in athletics, including the establishment of a men’s and women’s basketball teams and the men’s soccer team’s historic advancement to the national tournament, highlight the dedication to having athletic excellence and boosting the student experience. These achievements not only elevate the college’s profile, but also contribute to a dynamic and engaged campus community.

Not only do these developments offer opportunities for students to engage in sports they love, but for both players and their student audience to contribute their voice to the school spirit. The immediate success for every team not only elevates the college’s profile, but also contributes to a dynamic and engaged campus community, inspiring both current students and alumni to celebrate their school along with its athletic accomplishments.
