Shanah Tovah

Shanah Tovah

By Lucas Ben Spires, Special to the Journal

Three rows of four watercolor pomegranates
“Shanah Tovah” | Lucas Ben Spires

I made this piece for Rosh Hashanah. At the time of painting, it was the year 5786 in the Hebrew Calendar. Pomegranates are traditionally eaten because it is said that they have 613 seeds, symbolic of the 613 mitzvot or commandments. This piece is gouache on 5×5 cold-press watercolor paper.
