I gather my thoughts before I depart
The weather brings dark nights and hard days
Secretly, I wish I could give you a glimpse of my heart
But invariably, you’re stuck in your ways.

Ill or alone, the flowers will still bloom
The mirror shows you their faults
Yet, there’s none who know you

About this series

This poetry series was written for a final project in African American Literature at Pellissippi State. The author, Amberia Shoemaker, writes in the style of noted African American poet and playwright, Georgia Douglass Johnson, who was an important writer during the New Negro Movement and the Harlem Renaissance.
