In January 2026, Netflix released one of their newest thriller series, His & Hers, which is arguably one of the best limited series Netflix has put out in the past year. Set in the small town of Dahlonega, Georgia, the show follows two main characters, journalist Anna Andrews, played by Tessa Thompson, and Detective Jack Harper, the lead detective on the cases, played by Jon Bernthal. While they seem to be strangers in the beginning, their interconnected past is later revealed as the series goes on.
There are several characteristics that made this show very unique among the many other Netflix original series: the plot twists, acting, characters, and the emotional tension of the show.

While most networks will produce shows that add in huge plot twists solely for the purpose of driving excitement, falling into the trap of being nonsensical at best and predictable at worst. In contrast, His & Hers will have the viewers pausing the show every 30 minutes just so they are able to put the puzzle pieces together and figure out the answers before they are revealed. Critic Dana Feldman from Forbes agrees, โNetflix viewers have been obsessed with the limited series His & Hers โฆ making it the No. 1 series since its January 8th premiere.โ Not only did the show hit the number one series in January, and stay there, it also topped the English TV list with 29.5 million views.โ
Itโs not just the unpredictability that makes the plot twists so good, but the slow suspense that builds throughout the series. The show does an amazing job of stacking small lies throughout episodes without showing too much information to constantly catch viewers off guard, simultaneously building on the previous twists while sending viewers in a new direction they might not have considered before. This approach has viewers constantly second-guessing their own opinions, making the show interactive in a way for the audience.
For example, there’s a scene early on in the first episode where Anna questions Jack in front of other news reporters, asking if it was true he knew the victim. This question stops Jack in his tracks, staring at her for a moment, confused, while Anna smirks. After he walks away, another detective is questioning Jack on why she said that and if he knew the woman, and he completely disregards all the questions and moves on. This scene gives the viewers subtle tension while hinting at withheld information right off the bat โ subtle pauses and slow-worded responses from Jack hint at the fact that he’s hiding something.
The acting and characters also make the show stand out from similar thriller dramas, as each and every actor brings something special to the series. However, all of them shared a common theme of manipulation. They all act natural, calm, and confident while hiding their secrets, which makes them seem even more convincing to the audience. Most importantly, their confidence is what makes their lies and secrets more believable for the viewers.
This is one of the main reasons the show is able to keep the audience engaged and on their toes, craving more information because each episode shapes the audience’s minds on which character or characters could have committed the murders that the detectives are investigating.
Another great example of this is also in episode one, in Anna and Jack’s first conversation at Anna’s house after Jack unexpectedly shows up, proving they know each other and have a past. Anna starts questioning Jack about the victim, trying to get information; she acts calm, professional, confident, yet standoffish. Jack stays calm but shows he’s uncomfortable and takes a long time to answer any of her questions. Neither of them give away any of their secrets, but their acting makes the audience believe they could be staying honest, while still hinting there’s more going on than is being shown.

The emotional tension present in almost every scene also builds pressure for the viewers, culminating into an effect that will have viewers clenching their jaws the entirety of the show. The emotional tension hinted within the charactersโ performances is a perfect representation of how a real relationship/friendship is. For example, people act differently in front of others versus alone and, more importantly, in how they talk about specific events after they happen.
A good example of strong emotional tension is during episode four when Anna and Jack meet by a waterfall to have a private conversation. They start discussing the case and then quickly move to an argument about Jack leading the investigation. The conversation then becomes deeply personal when Anna reveals that they had a child together and communicates her guilt over leaving her that night, before Jack expresses how he felt when Anna left Dahlonega.
Throughout the duration of this moment, both characters express real emotion, honesty, and vulnerability instead of their usual guarded behavior. This interaction is what makes the scene unique, unlike all of their past interactions.
JayโMi Vasquez, the managing editor at Southern News Reports, says, โThe series stood out to meโฆit approached the genre in an engaging way. It focuses on perspective, character and emotional tension. That choice is what ultimately made the series engaging to watch.โย ย
Not only was the character tension wonderful, but the chemistry between Anna and Jack is very strong and present throughout the entire show. Even though the plot doesn’t reveal information about their past until later episodes, you can see and feel through their tension that there was more to the relationship than the audience is initially led to believe.
All of these features from plot twists, acting, characters, to tension, all work together to make His & Hers a tense viewing experience. The intensity within the show is used to make the story feel important and keep viewers continuously hooked, as we want to know what happens next. This works so much better than most Netflix mysteries because the twists and turns are purposeful to the plot of the series instead of being used only to shock the viewers.
Every secret revealed in each episode makes the viewers consistently feel as if it could change everything they know about the case, which is what makes watching the show so exciting. The mix of suspense, drama, and mystery, backed by incredible performances from the lead performers as well as the screenwriters is what gives the show its strong energy and makes it so hard to stop watching.
