Painting, drawing, digital art, collages, however you choose to express your creativity, there’s a place for you in the Art Club here at Pellissippi State Community College! Meeting from 3-4 p.m on Tuesdays in Bagwell 102, students can bring an art project they’re working on or take part in whatever group activity that’s been planned! Everyone is welcome, no matter what skill level.

The President of the Art Club, Hannah Junge, said, “We’ve had people stop by who don’t know how to draw or haven’t drawn for years. There are no requirements for skill level or anything, so it’s a really fun and welcoming place.”

The Art Club was created for students to have a place to learn about and practice art, building a creative community on campus. As a college student, when all your time and energy is taken up with school and work, it can be challenging to make time for the things you enjoy. The Art Club is that space where students can come together and be creative during that time, doing what they’re really passionate about.

When asked about their favorite thing about Art Club, Kay Nguyen said, “Connection with everyone, it makes me happy just being able to see everyone, and what art they come up with, every Tuesday. As well as just finding other people with similar interests to me.”

If you’re looking to create friendships, the Art Club is a great place to start! It’s a casual space where everyone is having fun, plus, anybody can drop by and join in! If you are a creative, you’re sure to find like-minded people here who would appreciate your art and share their own.

Junge said, “I think sometimes at college it can be hard to make friends during classes because people are typically rushing around and stuff, but I feel like this is a place where people genuinely get to meet new people and build friendships.”

The student-led group activities are a big plus as well! Students are encouraged to share what they know about each genre of art and share with the group what they know. The club allows students to push outside of their creative comfort zones. Not only by trying out new projects or techniques or hearing about others’ artistic interests, but pushing the student to be vulnerable and share about themselves, while learning how to take charge of a room. In the past, they’ve had students teach about character design, bracelet making, sewing, and more! For all the clay lovers out there, there may be an upcoming workshop that’s right up your alley…

Fin Jump, a member of the Art Club as well as a cartoonist for Imaginary Gardens, said, “The collaboration in the Art Club is truly freeing. Many people have been able to indulge in their interests while teaching everyone something cool and unique that you just wouldn’t learn in any class. There’s nothing like taking an hour out of my day to do art for the sake of art with no pressure and a like-minded community.”

Hazel Capps, an Art Club member, expressed, “Not only is the Art Club really fun and informative, but there’s also a Discord server where we’re cheering each other on, and you can always improve if you ask for advice on there.”
